Larsen vs Olafsson
Bent Larsen and Fridrik Olafsson played
an 8 game rapid match in Reykjavic 11th-14th November 2003. Olafsson beat
Larsen 5-3. The match, sponsored by the Kaupthing Bank, continues with two
rounds per evening commencing at 20.00 Icelandic time.
The pair first played an historic 8 game match in Reykjavik in 1956 when both were 20 years old. In that match Larsen led 3.5-1.5 before Olafsson came back to level the match by winning games 6 and 7. Larsen won a final tense game to take the match 4.5-3.5. (Incidently ChessBase Megabase has this match as being in Oslo 1955 which was the date and venue of the Scandanavian Championships. The match was the playoff the following year in Reykjavic after the two players tied. There is an account of the match in Larsen's own book of selected games.)
